In short

A single dental implant in the UK costs £2,000–£3,500 privately, including the abutment and crown. All-on-4 runs £10,000–£18,000 per arch, and a full mouth £20,000–£36,000. The NHS does not fund implants for ordinary tooth loss — a Band 3 course (£332.10 in England) pays for a denture or bridge instead. The same treatment at a vetted, EU-regulated clinic in Romania, Poland or Hungary costs 50–70% less.

*Except in cases of exceptional clinical need — see below. NHS band charges apply to England from 1 April 2026; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate different systems. Private ranges are market-typical for 2026 and vary by clinic, city, implant brand and the complexity of your case.

The NHS question

Can you get dental implants on the NHS?

For almost everyone, no. The NHS does not fund dental implants for ordinary tooth loss — decay, gum disease or age-related loss do not qualify, regardless of your financial circumstances. Implants are commissioned only in cases of exceptional clinical need: significant jaw bone loss following head and neck cancer treatment, major facial trauma, or congenital conditions that impair oral function. Applications are assessed by a hospital multidisciplinary team, and the large majority are declined.

What the NHS does cover is the conventional alternative. A Band 3 course of treatment costs £332.10 in England and includes crowns, bridges and dentures — however many items you need within that one course. For a patient missing several teeth, that means a denture or a bridge rather than implants. It is dramatically cheaper, but it is a different treatment with a different outcome: dentures rest on the gum and do not stop the bone loss that follows tooth extraction, whereas implants replace the root and preserve the jawbone.

Where the money goes

Why are dental implants so expensive in the UK?

An implant is not a single product but a multi-stage surgical treatment delivered over three to nine months. The price reflects five things:

Surgical time and training
Implantology is a postgraduate specialism. You are paying for a surgeon’s chair time across placement, healing checks and restoration.
Premium components
A Straumann or Nobel Biocare implant and abutment costs the clinic several hundred pounds before any labour.
Imaging and planning
CBCT 3D scanning, surgical guides and digital planning are standard for safe placement, and are billed into the fee.
Laboratory work
The final crown or bridge is custom-made by a dental technician — a hand-finished, individually shaded item.
Clinic overheads
UK practice costs — premises, staff, indemnity, CQC compliance — are high. London practices charge 20–40% more than regional equivalents.
The extras
Bone grafts, sinus lifts, extractions, sedation and zirconia upgrades are usually quoted separately and can add thousands.

This is why quotes vary so widely for what sounds like the same treatment. Always ask what is included — a £1,800 “implant” often excludes the abutment and crown, which are the parts that make it a tooth.

Bringing the cost down

How to reduce the cost of dental implants

Dental finance
Most UK clinics offer 0% APR over 12 months or longer terms with interest. It spreads the cost but does not reduce it.
Dental schools
University teaching clinics treat patients at reduced fees under supervision. Waiting lists are long and cases are selective.
Look outside London
The same treatment is frequently 20–40% cheaper in regional practices than in central London.
Treatment abroad
EU-regulated clinics in Romania, Poland and Hungary deliver the same implant brands to the same standards for 50–70% less.
Ask about phasing
Splitting a full-mouth plan across two budget years can make it manageable without changing the clinical outcome.
Check the warranty
A cheaper quote with no written guarantee is not cheaper. Compare what happens if something fails at year three.

Prices are for the same premium implant systems — Straumann and Nobel Biocare — placed in EU-regulated clinics. Return flights to Bucharest typically run £50–£150, and most cases need two trips. See how the trip works →

What that means in pounds

The saving on a full mouth pays for the trip many times over

Even after flights, hotels and two visits, the difference on a full-arch case is measured in tens of thousands — not hundreds.

The obvious question

Is it safe to get dental implants abroad?

At a properly vetted EU clinic, yes. Romania, Poland and Hungary are full EU member states, so implant components must carry a CE mark under the same Medical Device Regulation the UK applies, clinics follow EN ISO 17664 sterilisation standards equivalent to UK HTM 01-05 guidance, and dental qualifications are mutually recognised across member states. The lower price reflects local wages, premises and lab costs — not cheaper implants or lower standards.

The risk in dental tourism is not the country, it is the individual clinic. That is what an independent advisory is for: we verify accreditation, the implantologist’s credentials and the written warranty before you travel, and we are paid by the clinic, never by you. See how we vet clinics →

Good to know

Dental implant costs — your questions

How much does a dental implant cost in the UK? +
A single dental implant costs £2,000–£3,500 privately in the UK, including the implant, abutment and crown. London clinics typically charge £2,200–£3,800. Add £150–£300 for the consultation and CBCT scan, and £300–£1,500 if you need a bone graft.
Are dental implants available on the NHS? +
Only in cases of exceptional clinical need — such as jaw bone loss after cancer treatment, major facial trauma or congenital conditions. Ordinary tooth loss from decay, gum disease or age does not qualify. The NHS alternative is a Band 3 course at £332.10 in England, which covers a denture or bridge rather than implants.
How much is a full mouth of dental implants in the UK? +
A full mouth using All-on-4 costs £20,000–£36,000 for both arches in the UK, or £10,000–£18,000 per arch. Central London and zirconia upgrades push this higher. The same treatment in Romania costs £6,000–£9,000 for both arches.
Why are dental implants so expensive in the UK? +
The fee covers a surgeon’s time across a three to nine month multi-stage treatment, premium components costing the clinic hundreds of pounds, CBCT imaging and surgical planning, a hand-made laboratory crown, and high UK practice overheads. Materials are only a fraction of it — most of the cost is skilled time and overheads.
Can I pay for dental implants monthly? +
Yes. Most UK clinics offer finance, commonly 0% APR over 12 months or longer interest-bearing terms. Finance spreads the cost rather than reducing it — on a full-mouth case, treatment abroad usually saves more than any finance deal.
How much cheaper are dental implants in Romania? +
Typically 50–75% less than UK private prices. A single implant is £450–£900 versus £2,000–£3,500 in the UK, and a full mouth £6,000–£9,000 versus £20,000–£36,000 — using the same Straumann and Nobel Biocare systems under EU regulation.
What should be included in a dental implant quote? +
A complete quote covers the consultation and CBCT scan, the implant, the abutment, the final crown, all follow-up appointments and a written warranty. Watch for quotes advertising a low “implant” price that exclude the abutment and crown — the parts that actually give you a tooth.
Are dental implants worth the cost? +
Clinically, implants are the only option that replaces the tooth root, which preserves the jawbone that recedes after extraction. They do not decay, and with good hygiene the fixture commonly lasts decades. Against a bridge that may need replacing every 10–15 years, the lifetime cost often narrows considerably.
Do dental implants last a lifetime? +
The titanium fixture in the jaw frequently lasts 20 years or more and often a lifetime. The crown on top is a wearing part and may need replacing after 10–15 years. Success depends heavily on gum health, hygiene and not smoking.
How many trips abroad does implant treatment need? +
Usually two. The first trip places the implants and fits temporary teeth, then you heal at home for three to six months, and the second trip fits the final permanent teeth. Some straightforward cases are completed in one longer visit.
